Roberta Hamburgh grew up in the fifties and sixties in Mirando City, Texas, a small oil field community near Laredo, a Mexico border town. The men in her family worked the oil field and the women were teachers. Roberta left South Texas to go to college at the University of Missouri in Kansas City.
She studied art history there and in graduate school at the University of Iowa where she was awakened by the Iowa Writer’s Workshop course that I took from C.D.B. Bryan, author of Friendly Fire. Writing poetry and short stories became a regular part of her life. She moved back to Texas for a short while as her husband got a job teaching at Lamar Tech in Beaumont, Texas. She got her master’s degree in Teaching Emotionally Disturbed Children from the University of Michigan, and spent four years teaching at the University of Michigan Children’s Psychiatric Hospital. Then in Montana, she taught Special Education, regular education and spent the last eleven years as a principal. In Montana, she had the opportunity to study writing with Molly Daro May, author of Map of Enough, and she also studies with Rosemary Danielle, author of Fatal Flowers, in Georgia each summer. |
