Jane Mylum Gardner was raised in Wilson, North Carolina, and moved to New York City in 1969, where she lived for thirty-three years. During that time, Jane pursued an independent study of artists and their creative processes. After attending a silent writer’s retreat with famed author Madeleine L’Engle, Jane joined an offshoot group in 1989. Jane’s book, Henry Moore: From Bones and Stones to Sketches and Sculptures, was published in 1993 by Four Winds Press and made the coveted Blue Ribbons Children’s picture books list. After Madeleine’s passing, Jane and others wrote memorial essays published in a book, A Circle of Friends, edited by Katherine Kirkpatrick. Following 9/11/01, Jane returned to her hometown in 2002, and taught elementary- and middle-school art. During COVID, Jane was “tremendously nourished” by her writing groups and art classes, which met via Zoom. “Letting go of some of those old critical voices has given me a sense of freedom and allows me to value my truths as I see and experience them.”
